CARCASS DATA 2021
This year we chose to express the IMF as a ratio because it is easier to compare the bulls against one another. We feel as though it really doesn't matter what they scan relative to the industry as much as it matters how they scan in their contemporary group. Feed, environment, health and handling all have an integral effect on the potential marbling scores. Our bulls have all been handled the same way with the same feed program and health program. They are not pushed on feed. It’s a high roughage diet to ensure longevity and to evaluate their actual genetic value not just what they are fed.
Bulls right now are getting, per head- 15lbs earlage, 1/2lb commercial protein/balancer pellet, 5lbs. wet corn gluten, 5lbs silage. With the rest being poor hay for filler. The bulls are never creep fed and managed for them to be lean. We have been ultrasounding the bulls for the past 18 years. Every year they usually have less than 2/10th backfat on an average which is to ensure fertility and longevity. We want see the animal’s genetic potential rather than feeding them through a “gain period” or overfeeding to make them look good.

As you look through the EPD’s on the bulls you will notice that none are highly ranked within the Simmental breed. This happens for a few reasons here at the Limerock. We use Fleck influence in all of our cattle to enhance growth, fertility, fleshing ability, muscling and superior maternal traits. Simmental EPD's don't reflect our goals with Fleckvieh influenced genetics. Our program is built around real world cattle, cattlemen and women. We continue to strive for sound, functional and long lasting bulls & females. We feel basing our cowherd on just numbers is doing a disservice to our customers.

Wibaux has done an excellent job for us. We bought him from Nelson Livestock out of Baker, Montana in 2016. He was their high selling red bull. Sired the #3 Carcass steer in the 2018 Iowa Carcass Challenge. We kept a bunch of heifers from him and they seem to be doing their job well. Dispositions are like no other you can walk up and scratch him. Hate to let him go but we have other herd sires coming up and we figured out where to use him in our program. We have semen bank on him.
